Socio-Cultural Factors And Health Seeking Behaviour Of Women In Gboko Local Government Area Of Benue State

Abstract

Health seeking behaviour of women is very important because women constitute half of the global population. In many parts of the world, especially among the developing societies, there are socio-cultural factors that affect the health seeking behaviour of women. The consequence of these factors on the use of health facilities among women is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. This study examined socio-cultural factors influencing health seeking behaviour among women in Benue State. The objectives were to assess traditional beliefs system, gender roles and norms, and socioeconomic status influencing health seeking behavior among women in Benue State. Anderson model was used to explain the phenomenon. The study identified several factors that have important influence health seeking behaviour on women utilization of health services in the study area.
